“In sum, my dream is for you to be the most loving global speaker, a speaker who will keep telling our story and our history as a tribe to the future generations of professional speakers that will come after us.

“I dream of nothing less than a better life for you as a professional speaker. A life that has a clear meaning and purposiveness. A life away from hate, envy, over-competitive mindsets, and self-centeredness and, in its place, a life full of trust and collaboration.

“I dream of an environment where peers reach out to one another in good times and in bad. An environment where we come together to share our unique experiences, our personal discoveries, and our stories that can help us learn more about ourselves and the people and organization we serve."

“Why the speaking industry in the Philippines has never grown over the last decade isn’t difficult to understand, at least now that I think I’ve already figured it all out. And I can sum it up in just one word: selfishness.” —Lloyd A. Luna, RSP

The Philippine Association of Professional Speakers, Inc. (PAPS) took flight on July 31, 2017 when it was formally recognized by the Securities and Exchange Commission of the Philippines (SEC). Its registration number: CN201725232.

The primary thrust of the PAPS is to be the home of aspiring and seasoned speaking professionals in the Philippines. Its core mission is to provide holistic development for its members as they work together to advance a highly professional and united speaking industry.

By establishing a community to oversee their myriad common concerns and by policing their ranks, professional speakers in the country can now have the confidence to build a sustainable speaking enterprise.

More than 2,000 years ago, our Filipino ancestors built the rice terraces out of the Cordillera Mountains in northern Philippines using a unique leadership philosophy and management system.

Comparing this stunning man-made structure with what we know today as the other Wonders of the Ancient World, many of which were built by either salaried workers or slaves on orders by individual reigning rulers, the hand-made rice terraces stand out for three intriguing reasons: One, they were constructed by freemen. Two, no single leader was ever identified to have taken credit for building them. Three, they stood the test of time.

This book illustrates an inspiring picture on how the so-called barbaric, naive, and uneducated ancient Filipino society has constructed and maintained a millennia-old magnificent edifice of elaborate beauty, which on the contrary speaks volumes of our great identity, unique leadership philosophy, and sustainable management ingenuity. It can help you rediscover our authentic culture that may just solve the modern challenges in leading and managing people even in our own time.

I was wrong.

For decades, I’ve been taught that leadership is about one single person on top, and in order for me to be there, I will have to beat every person in my way, whatever it took.

Because that’s what I knew, I competed and fought my way to the top. Sometimes, I would win. Many times, I would lose. Either way, the result didn’t make me happy. After all, knowing that I have beaten someone is as equally as heartbreaking as knowing I’ve been beaten by someone.

Nobody wins in a competition. However, the concept of leadership that has been around for a long time encourages people to compete on different levels, at different times, in different styles. If you want to be a leader, you’ve got to be on top, in front, and in control. Beat everybody else and rise from the ranks. It goes on and on. Not only that, the same competitor’s mindset cascades down to the very last man in the organization.

It wears down everyone eventually.

No wonder many leaders today say it’s lonely at the top. You have to defend your position constantly from whoever is trying to steal it from you. As it happens, the people under you will never stop challenging you and your rivals will never stop jockeying for power. You’ll keep hanging on until you’re exhausted or it’s simply time to let go and admit defeat. Beating everyone during the quest for leadership won’t make you happy. The same goes for the people you work with. But maybe it’s the system that puts you there. Regardless, you’re trapped.

In the end, nobody gets out of it unhurt. Yet, we are made to believe that competition is good for an organization because it brings out the best in all of us. In reality, it does not always work that way. In fact, many times it breaks the leader, then the people, and in the long run—the entire organization. While competition drives progress and gives the leader the focus and energy to great heights of accomplishment, it can overwhelm the leader.

Admittedly, winning can bring satisfaction to leaders. It also leads to recognition, which leaders need every once in a while.

However, winning over our fellow human beings for the sake of recognition, if that’s the only thing that defines our leadership, can also lead to self-destruction. That is when the winning mindset leads to extreme stress, unfair judgment, or unethical practices and misbehavior.

In the long run, we can’t sustain an organization fueled by greed, self-centeredness, and rivalry.

Chances are, our type of leadership today creates a culture of self-centeredness, individualism, doubt, and competition—a perfect recipe for an inevitable disaster where everyone becomes a casualty.

But in the grand scheme of things, this is not even the original Filipino leadership philosophy. It was imposed on us and we embraced it. And because we have gotten used to it, we’ve forgotten our own art of leadership.

Prior to the European invasion of the Philippines in the 1500s and Americans in the late 1800s, we already had our own unique leadership structure. In fact, it built one of the world’s most advanced mega-structures in ancient times.

Learning about it can shed light on our leadership challenges today. It explains what brought us in this chaotic leadership situation and why you can’t get away from it.

In this time of the pandemic we have that singular opportunity. We got the opening to create intentional transformations that can change the way we see the world, the way we decide on matters that greatly affect our lives, and the way we want to shape our very own future. But first, we need to answer an important and very crucial question. If you’re sure to be a different person one day and it’s within your power to choose now what path to take every day to get there, will you actually use that power? Or will you simply wait for that day when you are no longer the same person that you are right now? This presentation can help you understand and eventually show you how to acquire and use that power.

Katherine “Kate” Dalaga Garcia of SMDC is hosting a global webinar on leadership and transformation.

The Covid-19 pandemic imposed on us an overwhelming challenge the likes of which we’ve never seen before. That’s why it’s not a shame to be shocked, to be disrupted, to be terribly frustrated. But we shouldn’t languish in our setbacks far too long. We have to keep making minor and major decisions every day to redefine and reshape our future the best we can.

Because we still can’t figure out the full complexity and impact of the disruption we experienced in 2020 and that we continue to experience up to now, many of us feel that we are in such a terrible mess indeed. Because we are so unsure about what else the future has in store for us, we have every reason to be scared, really scared.

In short, the past seems pretty enough compared to now, the present does look very messy, and the future itself just feels so intimidating and so scary.

Obviously, it’s tempting to look back with a great sense of loss because many of our successes lie there. When we are uneasy with our present and scared about the future, it is comforting to turn to the past because it’s difficult to do away with our old habits and our past big accomplishments.

Come to think of it, the only thing that’s real to many of us is the here and now. The present is the only thing that matters because it’s the only time and space where we can make real decisions and take concrete actions. The present—and everything in it whether bad or good—is in fact the only thing we’ve got. If we don’t deal with it, if we don’t face it as it is and if we don’t rebuild from it, what other time and place are there for us to start rebuilding?

Clearly, it’s either we start right here and right now or we don’t start at all.

After months of limited mobility and restricted social activity, many people have realized that they should accept that life is very different now, and that they themselves are likewise very different now. In short, they have changed, have grown, and—as the title of this book describes—they have been transformed into new personas.

In my case, it was through my own personal experiences during this pandemic that I learned that there are three types of transformations—natural, incidental, and intentional.

Natural transformation. It happens when people simply await and accept whatever changes will happen in them. Aging is a good example. You don’t have to do anything to age. It simply happens.

Incidental transformation. It takes place when people just happen to get affected or made uncomfortable by changes that transpire around them. In other words, it happens because of external incidents over many of which, if not all, we don’t have much or any kind of control. It can happen because of a new rule or procedure or perhaps an introduction of a new policy or regulation. In many cases, it can also happen as a result of competition like, say, when a particular company comes up with an innovation.

Another incidental transformation is the prevalence today of work-from-home arrangements that are meant to minimize and slow the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. But whether it’s just temporary or will become permanent remains to be seen.

Intentional transformation. This kind of transformation is what this book will take up in detail in the following chapters. People undergo this kind of transformation when they get to understand the situation and thereafter develop and purposively observe a specific action framework—zones, processes, and competencies—to effect change. It occurs when people consciously influence their choices and actions to take new forms within that new framework.

In this book, my goal is to present the intentional transformation framework that I myself have created to deal with the disruption wrought on my life and career as an onstage professional speaker. I will share my own story of frustration, fear, and insecurity and how I made headway from being disrupted to becoming an inventive disruptor.

THE THREE ZONES OF TRANSFORMATION

My transformation framework is made up of three zones. The first is the disruption zone or “mga bagay na nagulo.” Second, the realization zone or “mga bagay na nalaman.” And third, the creation zone or “mga bagay na nagawa.”

In the succeeding chapters, I will enumerate the three processes that bridge these zones, namely introspection, exploration, and innovation.

Supporting the processes are three competencies that give us the power to undertake them: agility, creativity, and nonconformity.

This framework aims to give you a fresher, more incisive look at the transformation process for individuals and for organizations as well.
